Will iPad Change Education?

In this video, you can watch as a 2.5 year old girl uses the iPad for the very first time.  It’s intuitive, because within a matter of seconds she’s learned how to move from screen to screen, as well as enlarge photographs and apps to full size.  She notices right away it doesn’t have a camera (she apparently has experience with an iPhone).

Like many adult iPad users, this child experiences the slight frustration that comes from touching the edge of the touch screen and bringing everything back to the home screen.

Regardless of the frustration, it’s clear that children take to the iPad quickly and it’s intuitive controls are easy enough for a toddler to handle with little instruction.  Will the iPad begin changing education? Will parents begin purchasing iPads for their children or will schools provide them as learning tools instead of the standard computer?

Will iPads become interactive textbooks?  While Amazon’s Kindle and similar e-readers offer a static reading experience (similar to viewing a PDF file on your computer), the iPad makes it possible to create a completely interactive experience.  If you have a photograph of a musician in a textbook, you could press it and listen to music by that musician.  If you’re studying the periodic table, the images could be “spun around” and looked at from all angles, similar to how you might pick up an object and turn it around in your hands to examine it.

The iPad has the potential to change the educational experience, and it seems we’ve only just touched the surface of what we could do with technology like this.

Four and a Half Ways to Creatively Destroy Your iPad

Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads and is now predicted to be selling more than 1.2 million iPads each month. Many Apple fan boys and fan girls would give up their first born child to get their hands on an iPad, but that hasn’t stopped people from finding new and creative ways to destroy an iPad.

There’s no shortage of people that to throw $499 to $829 down the drain by creatively destroying their iPad and posting the video online for the world to see. The iPad has been beaten, smashed, attacked with power tools, electrified, skated upon and yes, even blended. We’re still waiting to see someone take a bullet to an iPad, but it’s only a matter of time until someone gets rifle-happy and records it with a Flip Cam.

Here are four and a half creative ways to destroy your iPad:

5. Skate on it

4. Smash it

3. Blend it

2. Burn it

This iPad happened to make it out alive because of the insulation that the gravel between the iPad and the fire afforded it, but it’s a cool video nonetheless.

1. Torture it

St. Louis Children’s Hospital Using iPad in Patient Care

The St. Louis Children’s Hospital has began using iPads to help ease the stay of their young patients by using Apple’s new pad computer for patient education, to help prepare children for surgery and for simple entertainment.

In the video above, the doctors highlighted that they use the iPad to show children pictures of the operating room staff dressed in their scrubs before going in for surgery.

The video also highlighted a sixth-grade girl named Britney who had been connected to an IV for more than two weeks. She said that the iPad has helped take her mind of her pain. A doctor was also shown using the device to teach a child about kidney disease.
