Just as expected, today BlackBerry tech giant RIM debuted the PlayBook, its long-awaited entry into the tablet wars. This tab is aimed at business use, and as RIM exec Mike Lazaridis put it, “Every successful professional has a great PlayBook.” The PlayBook sports a 7” screen, Flash-capable video and both front and read cameras.
Obviously, these make the playbook more suitable for videoconferencing than the iPad. The PlayBook will be less-app dependent and focus more on presenting the web as a computer does. Will corporate CEOs embrace the PlayBook? RIM certainly hopes so, since their stock has dropped 30% this year
Jacob Burch and Lon Harris will host episode 17 of This Week in iPad on Thursday, July 29th, at 4:00 PM PT on the ThisWeekIn Network. John Roberts, Cofounder and CTO of ComiXology will be the guest on the show.
About ComiXology
ComiXology began its business by, according to its website, “bringing Web 2.0 to the comic book market.” The company offers versions of popular comics online through its website and works with Marvel, DC Comics and more than 30 other publishers to deliver comics and graphic novels in an iPad friendly format through its “Comics” app and branded versions developer for the company’s partners. Last Week, DC Comics launched its offering for the iPad using technology from ComiXology.
Sponsors
“Print Magic” Wellala is the first sponsor of This Week in iPad. The application allows users to print to any Wi-Fi connected printer directly from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Users can copy and paste text into the application for printing and users can also print images from the iOS photo library directly. Print Magic and Print Magic HD are available from the App Store. Host Lon Harris said on This Week in iPad that the app is “incredibly fast” and “works like a dream.”

Jacob Burch and Lon Harris hosted episode 16 of This Week in iPad on Thursday, July 22ndth, at 4:00 PM PT on the ThisWeekIn Network. The guest on this week’s show was Jason Smith, creator of “Uzu”
Harris thanked the newest sponsor of This Week in iPad, PressReader, an iPad application which brings more than 1500 newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, to the iPad. Users can purchase a single paper for $0.99 or get 31 downloads per month for $9.99.
Show and Tell (8:45)
Fruit Ninja HD – Harris demoed Fruit Ninja HD in which users have to slash fruit with their sword via swiping. Harris said Fruit Ninja HD was fun, but does not have enough staying power for the $4.99 price tag.
Harris asked users to provide feedback on the new Show and Tell games segment to @lons on Twitter.
News (13:00)
Flip Board – Flip Board is a new social media magazine iPad application for the iPad which has gained notoriety, but has had some issues because of the popularity of the app. Burch said people will get over the early issues that the app has had because of over usage.
Ten Weirdest iPad Accessories – ElectronicHouse did a round-up of the ten weirdest iPad accessories including an iPad Maxi, a case for the iPad which resembles a Maxi-Pad and the Thipad, a Velcro-strap to attach an iPad to your thigh.
iPad Video – Users on the iPad watch video for 2.5 times longer on the iPad than on the desktop, according to a Business Insider report citing MeFeedia. The hosts discussed reasons for the difference and suggested that watching a video on the iPad requires more commitment than watching video on the desktop
Uzu(30:00)
Uzu is an interactive fireworks display for the iPad. The hosts discussed the usage of the app and the lack of any sort of menu or settings for the app. Smith said that he hopes to take the abstract interface of the app and turn it into a type of multi-touch game. Smith added that he hopes games on the iPad will evolve into being social and interactive rather than being a “one player game” or a “two player game.”
Smith shared that he marketed his application by posting a YouTube video of his application in action and lowering the price of his application to $0.99 during Independence Day Weekend.
When discussing developing for the iPad, Smith said that he took the premise of taking the performance available on the iPad and making the best use of it. Last week, Aaron Barsky said that developing for the iPad was a bit challenging because of the graphics engine on the iPad.
Uzu said that he plans on adding additional motion controls such as VGA out, shaking the iPad and rotating the iPad.
Sponsor #2 – Wellala (45:15)
Harris thanked Wellala, producer of Print Magic and Print Magic HD, for sponsoring This Week in iPad and showed an in-house commercial for the app.
Planet of the Apps (47:45)
Evernote – Burch reviewed Evernote for the iPad, which provides extremely powerful functionality, but is somewhat “busy” and said that he prefers apps which do one thing very well.
Paper Desk – Harris reviewed Paper Desk ($1.99), which allows users to mix doodling and typing. Harris said that the eraser and pen applications were a bit clunky and that the app needs the ability to zoom. He noted the lite version of the application and keyboard support.
Pad Notes – Burch reviewed Pad Notes, which does not provide typing functionality and only allows users to draw using their finger. He noted an interesting feature which allows users to draw notes on top of PDF files.
Penultimate– Penultimate is similar to Pad Notes, but Harris said that it was “extremely pretty” but that the app doesn’t work too well with a stylus. He criticized the app for not having many pen and color options and not having a zoom.
Simple Note – Burch Reviewed Simple Note, which is an improved version of the included Notes App that will provide wireless syncing when iOS 4 comes to the iPad.
Helvetica Note – Harris reviewed Helvetica Note, which has the distinguishing feature of providing users the ability to write notes in the font Helvetica.
Sponsor #2 – Gazelle (57:30)
Harris thanked Gazelle, a service which will purchase or recycle your old electronics, for sponsoring This Week in iPad.
Closing Remarks(67:00)
