ClamCase Turns Your iPad into a Laptop

In our Apple Keyboard Dock for the iPad Review, we showed you the pros and cons of using a docked keyboard. More importantly, we noted that “the major frustration with the keyboard is that the dock that the iPad sits on sticks out like a sore thumb, preventing it from fitting in most cases well.”

Another complaint from users about the iPad in general is that they don’t feel it can replace their laptop.

In comes ClamCase. Coming in Fall 2010, this innovative new product (patent pending) will include an all-in-one keyboard and case, making your iPad look pretty identical to a laptop.

There are three main components to this stylish Frankenstein design:

A bluetooth keyboard, which connects via Bluetooth, so you can still continue to use the dock connector to charge your iPad.

The 360 Degree Flip Case has a grippy rubberized exterior so that you can keep it in your hands and not on the floor, and has a “closed” position so that it doesn’t open accidentally during travel.

The Infinity Stand makes it easy to use as either a laptop, or flipped like a tablet.

Here’s where I can see the ClamCase coming in most conveniently:

Storage: Just clap it together like a laptop and get going. If you don’t want to disconnect it and prefer to keep everything together, you can do it. It’s designed to easily fold up in case you want to hold it in your hands the normal way as well.

Typing: This is just a benefit of having a keyboard in general, but have you tried using one of those tiny Apple bluetooth keyboards? Trying to fit two hands on that keyboard is like trying to shove your fist into a pickle jar.

Watching Movies: If you’ve tried watching your Netflix movies on an iPad, even with a stand-up case, you know how it is. It tips… it rocks… and you’re usually holding it up in one way or another.

Ever had that problem with a laptop? Not so much, because you have control over the angle of the screen, and the base gives you leverage. Add a new and improved paid subscription to Hulu, and you’re looking at carpal tunnel without something that’ll hold up the iPad a little more securely.

The ClamCase website is not exactly a wealth of knowledge, but it does say that the case comes out in Fall 2010 and in any case it’s got to be better than this contraption:

A Saddleback iPad Sleeve will Outperform Your iPad

Plenty of sleeves can outlast an electronic advice, but the $55 iPad Sleeve from Saddleback Leathers actually comes with a 100 year warranty and the slogan, “they’ll fight over it when you’re dead”.

As Rob Beschizza at BoingBoing puts it, “It’s one of the few iPad cases that will not only last longer than your iPad, but provide nourishment after the zombie holocaust.”

Saddleback products have become pretty popular in the gadget circles and their $400+ laptop bags are already being carried and praised by a number of serial entrepreneurs and techies like Chris Brogan.

So with a plethora of travel bags, messenger bags, satchels and briefcases in hand-made production, they’ve also put together a line of iPad Sleeves which come in four colors: Dark Coffee Brown, Carbon Black, Chestnut and Tobacco Brown.

Animal lovers beware—these cases are the real thing. Saddleback admits that while they don’t use kangaroo hide, which has the toughest tensile strength rating of leathers, they lined this sleeve with the second best option: pigskin. According to the site, it’s 8 ¾”w x 10 3/8″h (22.2cm x 26.4cm) flat, “but you can fit a large grapefruit inside” and  it “can be stretched to fit like a pistol in a holster”.

Saddleback has a history in making great videos, and it’s probably the reason why the techies love them so much. They’ve got videos of their bags vs. alligators and sharks as well as user-submitted pictures of their products in the wild.

Even more, Dave from Saddleback puts together introductory videos for each of their products, so if you want to learn more about the case, watch his video.

Also, they won’t tell you beforehand, but 10% of your purchase will go to charities such as JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), ANLM (Africa New Life Ministries), Mercy Ships, and Compassion International. When you order your product, you’ll get a confirmation email that includes the text below:

“Oh, and by the way, I didn’t want to tell you this before you joined, but 10% of the gross amount that you gave to Saddleback went directly to one of those aid organizations on the Dave’s Links page. If you spent $500 + $20 for shipping then $52 went out to love people. Basically, you just contributed to drilling a well for an entire village or partially sponsored a 5 year old street kid in Rwanda to get into a loving orphanage and go to one of the best schools in the country. This is the main reason Saddleback Leather exists. Just wanted to let you know… between friends. Thanks for helping.”

So you could get your average $40 iPad sleeve at the Apple store, a $250 Gucci iPad sleeve, or spend $55 bucks on a super durable sleeve that also doubles as a grapefruit holder.

Case Reviews: Incase Convertible Book Jacket

After finding myself woefully disappointed with Apple’s $39.95 neoprene case, I decided to searching for the perfect iPad case. Eventually I happened upon Incase‘s  website and purchased their “Convertible Book Jacket” model.

The case is made out of black leather and also serves as a stand for your iPad so that you can tilt it at a number of different viewing positions. The case’s ability to keep your iPad at about just any angle that you would like is probably the best feature of the device. I’ve found that having the iPad at about a 45 degree angle makes for the best combination of typing and viewability.

Another nice feature of the device is that it contains an elastic band which you can use to securely shut the case of your iPad for travel. We haven’t seen this on a lot of other cases and it gives the case a much more solid feel when lugging iPad around.

If you’re looking for a case that won’t add a lot of bulk to your iPad, unfortunately, this isn’t it. The Incase Convertible Book Jacket case easily triples the thickness of your iPad. However, the added thickness does give your iPad some additional level of protection if you accidentally drop the device.

We were also disappointed by the price ($59.95), but this complaint isn’t unique to Incase’s Convertible Book Jacket. A lot of iPad cases seem to cost much more than the cost of the materials, manufacturing, marketing and a healthy profit margin. Fortunately, iPad case prices will likely decline over time as the size of the iPad market grows and more manufacturers are creating cases.

This case is built solidly and will provide your iPad a lot of protection. It’s definitely a premium-priced case, but the ability to orient your iPad at different angles and ensure your iPad is well protected while traveling makes the device worth the price of admission.
