Accessory Reviews: GelaSkins for the iPad

As useful as the iPad is for business applications and personal use, few would deny that one of its biggest appeals as a piece of consumer electronics is as a fashion statement. Apple has been successful pitching their products as symbols of a certain kind of high-tech lifestyle. While the sleek metallic gray finish we’ve all grown accustomed to is quite eye-catching, there might still be some out there who wish to accent their iPad with a personal touch. That’s were GelaSkins come in.

GelaSkins are removable adhesive covers that you can stick to your iPad. They don’t offer the full protection of a bona fide case, but they are made of a durable material that prevents scratches from everyday use. Utilizinge an advanced adhesive from 3M allows them to be applied and removed and reapplied several times without leaving any residue or unsightly bubbles.

While the protection element is definitely part of the GelaSkins equation, the real attraction is the ability to apply one of their stunning pieces of original artwork on your iPad. Their website features over one thousand pieces of art from international artists ranging from the banal to the brilliant to the just plain awesome. No matter your aesthetic inclinations, it’s a fair bet that there is something on GelaSkins that will catch your eye.

Even better, GelaSkins offers the ability to make your own custom print. You can use one of the existing designs and tweak it using their layout editor. If you are more technologically and artistically adept, you can create a new design from scratch. Draw your own design or use a picture of your pet or spouse; everything is fair game. Something simple and timeless is more likely to look good in this context, but it’s totally up the user and his or her tastes.

GelaSkins are not without their flaws, of course. Applying them can be something of a hassle, especially if you choose to use a print on the front of your iPad as well as the back. The adhesive makes it easy to reapply over and over again, but actually lining it up with the edges of the iPad is harder than it looks. Once you smooth out all the bubbles, you’ll often find that one corner or the other is askew. It’s a pain, but once you have it all smoothed and correctly-oriented, the result is really stunning.

GelaSkins for the iPad cost $29.99 each and can be purchased from the GelaSkins website. They come highly recommended.

Company to Manufacture iPad-compatible Bed

Within the wider world of iPad accessories, there exist certain staid product categories. There are cases. There are keyboards. There are anti-glare screens, camera connection kits, and docks. As the iPad matures as a platform, however, we’re starting to see accessories that buck the conventional.

Take, for example, Hollandia International’s new iCon Bed. It features a deluxe adjustable mattress which allows two people to independently customize the comfort on each side of the bed. While beds have been doing that for years now, what makes the iCon unique is that it comes with a custom-made headboard that serves as a dock and speaker system for a pair of iPads. It features four fully enclosed speakers within the headboard itself as well as a 250-watt amplifier for playing music in bed.

“The iCon brings a fresh, new look to Therapedic customers, which we believe will attract a new type of customer to the Therapedic brand,” said Gerry Borreggine, Therapedic president and CEO.  “That is exactly why we are so excited about our new association with Hollandia. We look forward to learning from one another and helping our brands continue to grow.”

Of course, luxury never comes cheap. The iCon bed starts at $20,000 for a queen-size bed, though they offer as many as 200 colors and fabrics to match bedroom décor or perhaps one’s fashionable iPad case.

Those hoping to splurge on an iCon right away might be disappointed, however. Hollandia currently operates just two retail outlets in the United States, with one in Philadelphia, PA and the other in Short Hills, NJ, though they do have plans to expand internationally.

ClamCase Turns Your iPad into a Laptop

In our Apple Keyboard Dock for the iPad Review, we showed you the pros and cons of using a docked keyboard. More importantly, we noted that “the major frustration with the keyboard is that the dock that the iPad sits on sticks out like a sore thumb, preventing it from fitting in most cases well.”

Another complaint from users about the iPad in general is that they don’t feel it can replace their laptop.

In comes ClamCase. Coming in Fall 2010, this innovative new product (patent pending) will include an all-in-one keyboard and case, making your iPad look pretty identical to a laptop.

There are three main components to this stylish Frankenstein design:

A bluetooth keyboard, which connects via Bluetooth, so you can still continue to use the dock connector to charge your iPad.

The 360 Degree Flip Case has a grippy rubberized exterior so that you can keep it in your hands and not on the floor, and has a “closed” position so that it doesn’t open accidentally during travel.

The Infinity Stand makes it easy to use as either a laptop, or flipped like a tablet.

Here’s where I can see the ClamCase coming in most conveniently:

Storage: Just clap it together like a laptop and get going. If you don’t want to disconnect it and prefer to keep everything together, you can do it. It’s designed to easily fold up in case you want to hold it in your hands the normal way as well.

Typing: This is just a benefit of having a keyboard in general, but have you tried using one of those tiny Apple bluetooth keyboards? Trying to fit two hands on that keyboard is like trying to shove your fist into a pickle jar.

Watching Movies: If you’ve tried watching your Netflix movies on an iPad, even with a stand-up case, you know how it is. It tips… it rocks… and you’re usually holding it up in one way or another.

Ever had that problem with a laptop? Not so much, because you have control over the angle of the screen, and the base gives you leverage. Add a new and improved paid subscription to Hulu, and you’re looking at carpal tunnel without something that’ll hold up the iPad a little more securely.

The ClamCase website is not exactly a wealth of knowledge, but it does say that the case comes out in Fall 2010 and in any case it’s got to be better than this contraption:

3 Good Excuses for Using an iPad RAM Mount in Your Car

If I told you that I had a mount next to my car steering wheel that housed my iPad, what would you say? I’m guessing you’d be impressed for half a second, before responding with something like.. “wait.. what?” Then maybe something accusatory about how dangerous it is to watch Netflix and drive.

I’d of course come back at you with some kind of excuse about how I’m really into Season One of “Weeds”, my boyfriend refuses to watch it at home, and by the way, I have such a long commute to work anyway. Bo-ring.

Ok, so now imagine that this is all totally illegal, so instead I’ve prepared ahead and thought up some great excuses that will surely explain away the sweet new iPad RAM Mount in my car (which by the way, you’re still totally jealous of):

Awesome excuse for a RAM Mount #1: My iPod is simply not flashy enough. Really, I’m only listening to music on this thing while I drive. How will other drivers know I own an iPad that syncs wirelessly with Bluetooth unless they see the glow of it at night.

Awesome excuse for a RAM Mount #2: Most built in GPS systems are almost as big as an iPad, so what’s the difference? Try holding up an iPhone while driving and trying to follow the blue ball in Google Maps while weaving in and out of traffic.

Awesome excuse for a RAM Mount #3: I have kids? Nieces and nephews? Neighborhood children? Either way, they all want to ride with me and need to be constantly entertained while driving to and from the grocery store. When we get there, I’ll just dismount the iPad, plop the kiddos in a carriage, and if I’m lucky, they won’t make a peep when we pass the cookie aisle.

In all seriousness, there’s no easy way to explain away why you’d ever need an iPad mounted in your car, especially in the middle console or on the dashboard, but iPad Ram Mounts come out July 6th and they sure make you look cool.

Oh.. and if you’re on a boat. Also a good reason to have one. Hope you got the 3G model!
