Audiobook Service Audible.com Releases iPhone and iPad App

Audible.com, a service which provides digital downloads of audio books, has released an official application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad.

The release of the new application comes just a few weeks after Audible.com released a version of its software for Android-based smart-phones. Although Audible released the beta of its Android client before the release of its iPod application, Audible.com for the iPod appears to have leapfrogged the functionality of the Android application.

The primary function of Audible.com for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is to download and play audio books from Audible.com. If you already have an Audible subscription, the app will allow you to login and present you with a list of audio books that you have previously purchased. You can download any audio book that you have previously purchased to your iPod.

The app has the capability of browsing through your iPod library and finding audio books that have already been downloaded to your device using iTunes or Audible’s download manager. This makes it so that users don’t have to re-download audio books from Audible.com’s website to be used in the application.

You can also see news and events form Audible.com’s website, which provides suggestions for reading. The app provides some basic achievements as well, similar to what one would find in an Xbox 360 game. Users can climb from being an “Audible Newbie” to being an “Audible Master” by listening to books on their iOS device. There are also specific achievements such as “all nighter” and “repeat listener.”

Overall, the app works reasonably well, but there’s no interface specifically for the iPad yet. We’d also like to see Audible provide the ability to buy audio books directly from the device sometime in the future.

Barnes & Noble Updates App, Offers Free Coffee

Barnes & Noble recently updated the BN eReader app with a Version 2.1, which adds a number of features and tweaks that promises to keep Barnes & Noble in the middle of the eReader pack when it comes to features for the iPad.

Probably the biggest addition included in the update is a brightness control within the app that allows you to adjust the screen’s glow without having to back out into the setting. It may not sound that important, but anything they can do to help reduce eye strain makes the eReader experience on the iPad that much closer to a dedicated e-Ink-based eReader device like the Kindle or Barnes & Noble’s own Nook.

BN, in a nod to iBooks’ sleek presentation, also now displays a two-page spread when used in landscape mode instead of stretching the text to fit the screen, which looked unattractive to the eye.

The other updates were slightly less noticeable. Users can now delete free samples from within the Barnes & Noble app, removing the need to visit their website to unclutter one’s queue. They also list speed improvements for syncing and “improved periodical support,” but the specific extent to which those are actually improved isn’t immediately clear.

So far, no single e-book retailer has given a great reason to visit its book store over another with the exception of minor differences in price and selection. Apple’s iBookstore is by far the most popular on the iPad, clocking it at No. 4 on the app popularity charts as of this writing. Barnes & Noble comes in at No. 15, right between the Kindle app at No. 14 and the Borders app at No. 20.

Frequent users of BN Store’s competition might want to at least check the Barnes & Noble app out, however. The big book retailer is currently running a promotion where users of their iPad, iPhone, and iTouch apps can come into any of their retail stores through July 15 and receive a free tall coffee at the café simply by presenting an e-book purchased in the Barnes & Noble app to the cashier.

Will iPad Change Education?

In this video, you can watch as a 2.5 year old girl uses the iPad for the very first time.  It’s intuitive, because within a matter of seconds she’s learned how to move from screen to screen, as well as enlarge photographs and apps to full size.  She notices right away it doesn’t have a camera (she apparently has experience with an iPhone).

Like many adult iPad users, this child experiences the slight frustration that comes from touching the edge of the touch screen and bringing everything back to the home screen.

Regardless of the frustration, it’s clear that children take to the iPad quickly and it’s intuitive controls are easy enough for a toddler to handle with little instruction.  Will the iPad begin changing education? Will parents begin purchasing iPads for their children or will schools provide them as learning tools instead of the standard computer?

Will iPads become interactive textbooks?  While Amazon’s Kindle and similar e-readers offer a static reading experience (similar to viewing a PDF file on your computer), the iPad makes it possible to create a completely interactive experience.  If you have a photograph of a musician in a textbook, you could press it and listen to music by that musician.  If you’re studying the periodic table, the images could be “spun around” and looked at from all angles, similar to how you might pick up an object and turn it around in your hands to examine it.

The iPad has the potential to change the educational experience, and it seems we’ve only just touched the surface of what we could do with technology like this.

Amazon.com Adds Embedded Video and Audio to iPad Kindle App

Amazon.com announced a new update for the Kindle iPad, iPhone and iPod touch application which will allow users to access audio and video which are embedded in Kindle books.

According to a press release from the company, the first books which take advantage of the expanded technology are Rick Steves’ London by Rick Steves and Together We Cannot Fail by Terry Golway.

“We are excited to add this functionality to Kindle for iPad and Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Dorothy Nicholls, director, Amazon Kindle in a statement. “Readers will already find some Kindle Editions with audio/video clips in the Kindle Store today–from Rose’s Heavenly Cakes with video tips on preparing the perfect cake to Bird Songs with audio clips that relate the songs and calls to the birds’ appearances. This is just the beginning–we look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create for Kindle customers using the new functionality of the Kindle apps.”

Wiley Directory of Digital Content Sales Peter Balis said in the company’s statement, “We are truly excited to have collaborated with Amazon to launch Kindle Editions with audio/video, Innovations like these represent the advantages that digital can offer. Advancing our content in this manner is important for our authors and our readers and it will raise the bar on what digital reading can offer for years to come.”

The news comes just days after the company released a minor update to its Kindle app which takes advantage of the iPhone 4’s Retina display. In the application’s officially description, the developers promised to add the ability to look up words in a built in dictionary, but did not deliver. The developers also said that they would add support to look up words in Wikipedia and Google, but that functionality was not added either.

Users can see apps which take advantage of the Kindle app’s new audio and video functionality at http://www.amazon.com/kindleaudiovideo.
