jailbreak apple tv

iphone jailbreak application released to jailbreak Apple TV

The iPhone isn’t the only device that has gotten the jailbreak treatment. In fact, if you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that just about every device that hits the market is somehow hacked and given new innovative features.

Due to the high speed nature at which these hackers work, it isn’t long after a device hits the streets that its software gets cracked, exploited or otherwise jailbroken. The Apple TV is a prime example of this.

Having just recently hit the market, Apple TV gives consumers the ability to access Netflix’s library of content, rent TV shows for 99-cents and stream music and videos from a networked computer. At just $99 it’s hard to complain about any features that the tiny set-top box may be lacking but the hacking community evidently begs to differ.

Today, a video of an Apple TV jailbreak has hit the web showing us that the device can be unlocked just like Apple’s line up of iOS devices. Of course, seeing how it’s not a mobile phone, the traditional jailbreak characteristic of allowing the device to be used on non authorized wireless carriers doesn’t really come into play. What does come into play, however is the ability to load third-party application onto the Apple TV.

This is quite the breakthrough considering Apple did not bundle any App Store access with their set-top box. Unfortunately, there are virtually no third-party applications currently available for the device but as time goes on that will quickly change.

App Reviews: Fantasy Football Cheatsheet ’10

In the last two decades, fantasy football has gone from a niche game played principally by stats dorks and hardcore football fans to a mainstream cultural addiction that has infected groups as far afield as old college roommates, offices, and church groups. Where players once had to tabulate their point totals using box scores at the back of the newspaper every week, a veritable cottage industry of websites has sprung up to do the legwork for them.

If there was one part of the fantasy football experience that has managed to elude this transformation, however, it’s the draft. Fantasy fanatics know all too well the hassle of printing out dozens of guides and projections and trying to shuffle through them to try and find a value in those arduous middle rounds. With the help of Fantasy Football Cheatsheet ’10 and an iPad, those concerns are a thing of the past.

FFC basically gives you all the tools a fantasy fanatic could need right at your fingertips. It includes stat projections and tiers for players based on their average draft position, as well as projections for the coming the year. Users can customize the draft order based on their specific preferences for individual players, and the given projections themselves are flexible based on the myriad of scoring systems that a given league may choose to use. They’ve even included BYE weeks in the mix as well as strength of schedule for drafters who like to take it to the next level. This is serious stuff here.

Even veterans of online fantasy leagues are familiar with the terrible user interface and player tracking solutions in the draft rooms of fantasy sites like Yahoo and CBS Sports. FFC is thus a handy compliment for online players as well, since you can track drafted players with ease and compare a list of available players with a wish list of your own choosing. Something about the touch screen of the iPad just makes it perfect for this task.

If that were everything the app did, it would still be worth the fairly reasonable price of $2.99. Developer 290 Design has taken it a step further though by adding features to make FCC useful throughout the season. The app gives you weekly projections based on past performance and your league’s individual scoring system, as well as start recommendations based on those projections. This is useful stuff.

With the NFL season right on our doorstep, iPad-owning fantasy football nuts will find a lot to like about Fantasy Football Cheatsheet. Check it out.

Time Warner Cable Getting Into iPad Game

Time Warner Cable’s Jeff Simmermon, Director of Digital Communications, took the wraps off an innovative new approach to television on the iPad earlier this week. The prototype is as yet without a name, but what information we’ve been able to attain from their blog and a video they posted on YouTube is that they’re looking to integrate the iPad into the cable-watching experience.

What they have done is taken the iPad’s user-friendly touch-sensitive interface, and essentially turned it into an all-purpose remote control for their cable subscribers. Instead of interrupting the viewing experience on a television by navigating a channel guide on top of the programming being watched, users can browse the shows available on their iPad and change channels on their TV wirelessly from the iPad. They’ve even done one better by giving users the ability to program their DVR from the same interface. It’s a functionality that phones have had for a little while now, but the larger screen of the iPad really seems to lend itself well to this kind of navigation.

While the idea of an iPad as a remote control has a certain novelty to it (just ask Comcast, who showed off a similar prototype earlier this year), their VP of Web Services emphasized in the video that what they’re interested in doing in the future is offering a multi-screen experience, such that a user could start a program on her iPad and finish where she left off in the living room once she gets home. For frequent users of public transportation, one imagines this would be quite the boon.

It’s actually somewhat baffling that television companies haven’t been more urgent in getting their content onto the iPad platform. ABC appears to be the only company taking the iPad seriously with their ABC Player, though they have been tinkering with their ad platform. The iPad is a device that seems purpose-built for portable video, but the best options continue to be Hulu and Netflix.

Rare is the instance when movies and television compete for the same user attention spans, but with Netflix expanding their streaming movie options with the addition of MGM, Lion’s Gate, and Paramount, that is going to be the platform that attracts eyeballs. Time Warner Cable’s offering shows promise, but they seem to insist on using the iPad to augment the existing entertainment experience instead of acknowledging that the iPad is a platform of its own.

App Reviews: CineXPlayer for the iPad

From the beginning, users having marveled at the ability of the iPad to display crisp video in a portable package, while remaining less taxing on the eye than the smaller screens of the iPhone and iPod Touch. Its utility is certainly above reproach, but the fact that it only natively supports H.264 and MP4 video files has really limited its use, particularly for those who acquired most of their video content on a PC, where the AVI format is ubiquitous.

As was explored last month, one solution is Air Video, an app that allows users to stream video from a host computer over a network or even over the Internet. Of course, as convenient as Air Video is, it comes with its own set of limitations. While it allows for the conversion of any file type, including AVI, it is at the mercy of the internet connections involved. Even at the best of times, the quality is never going to pass for a native file.

Enter CineXPlayer. For the first time since the launch of the iPad, users are able not only to play AVI files on their iPads, but play them natively with no messy video conversion. The fact that CineXPlayer actually made it through Apple’s approval process for iTunes is actually something of a surprise, since every other AVI video player submitted to date has been rejected. Has Apple finally seen the error of their ways, or did this one just manage to slip through the cracks? Who cares! Just download it.

Actually getting movies into the app requires an indirect approach, since you can’t add AVI files to the Movies section of your iTunes library. Instead, you just plug your iPad into your computer, pull up the App tab under your iPad, and scroll to the File Sharing section. It lists the apps that utilize file sharing, one of which should be CineXPlayer. It’s only from there that you can add AVI files.

The app itself is actually rather sparse as far as features go.  The controls are extremely barebones, but it does give you the ability to delete movies from within the app as well as saved resume states for all of your movies. There really isn’t much else to speak of, but it’s really difficult to complain, since CineXPlayer is the only app capable of doing what it does, much less for free.

If playing AVIs is something you’re interested in, it’s advised that you download the App quickly. Apple has been known to change its minds in situations like these, and you don’t want to miss out on the fun.
