Morgan Stanley Analyst Says iPad Will See Faster Growth Than Netbooks

Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) analyst Katy Huberty estimated that the sales rate of Apple‘s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad could grow faster in its first year than netbooks.

Huberty increased her sales estimate for 2010 iPad shipments from 6 million to 10 million and said that Apple could sell between 13 million and 16 million during the device’s first full year of sales, well over the estimated 7.6 million netbooks which sold in that category’s first 12 months of sales.

The analyst also updated her previous net-book estimates saying that the iPad had an even more destructive effect on net-book sales in the U.S. then she had previously thought. Previously, the iPad was originally thought to have flattened growth levels for netbooks, however the net-book market actually shrank by 13% between April 2009 and April 2010. Huberty referred to the drop as “rare” and that it could be a sign that net-books have reached their maximum sales potential.

Morgan Stanley’s sales data does not include foreign sale because the iPad did not ship to other countries until the end of May. The effect of the iPad may be lower internationally because buyers may be more price sensitive in countries that have lower average incomes.
