Global Mundo Tapas, a restaurant in Sydney, Australia, has jumped on the tablet bandwagon by getting rid of their laminated menus and now hands their customers an Apple iPad which they can use to choose and order their meals, according to an AFP news release.

The restaurant implemented its new iPad-based menu’s less than one week after the Australian launch of the product.

“One of the points of difference for our restaurant was to have a unique menu,” the hotel’s general manager Craig Simpson commented to the press on Friday. “Everyone’s excited about the iPad and we’re jumping on the back of that.”

Hundreds of hopeful customers lined-up around the block in Central Sydney on May 28th to have a shot at being one of the first few in Australia to pick-up the new tablet computer. Simpson flew to Adelaide on the launch day of the iPad and purchased 15 of the highly-desired tablets on their launch day, paying A$629 each.”It’s the cost of doing business,” he said.

The restaurant also had an iPad application which allows customers to browse the restaurant’s menu along with photographs and notes about the taste of the meal. Customers can also order their meal with a press of a button. The restaurant hopes to add the ability to suggest wines to match to meals and use stock control menu’s to hide items that are sold-out on the menu in the future.

“Hotels used to be cutting-edge food and beverage,” Simpson said. “We are trying to bring the pizzazz back.”
